While the United States retreats, the EU's tougher approach to environmental protection is rippling into the supply chains of the global economy. "The ground is changing," commented Daryl Ditz of the Center for International Environmental Law, which works globally on behalf of environmental reform. "It's happening through all these micro-decisions made by companies in countries most Americans don't pay attention to.",z At the same time, new axis of power are emerging, independent of any of the superpowers. |

At the present time 2,4,-D "is under special review by the environmental protection Agency in the United States because of concerns about chronic health and environmental effects."3 In addition to being a toxic threat to animals and humans, chemical fertilizers and pesticides on lawns weaken the grass and destroy the natural balance of microbes and beneficial insect predators, thus, in the end promoting weed and insect proliferation.
As an alternative, try an organic fertilizer, which slowly feeds your lawn and does not kill earthworms. |

A new environmental protection Agency rule issued in August 2003 is a revision of the 1977 "new source review" provision, allowing the nation's most polluting power plants to upgrade equipment without implementing new emission-control measures. Scientists and officials have criticized it as the biggest rollback in the history of the Clean Air Act. |

Agricultural workers exposed to OP pesticides have significantly decreased bone formation compared to healthy controls.4

This evidence was detailed in 1990 by environmental protection Agency's Office of Criminal Investigation which charged Monsanto with a "long pattern of fraud" and with reporting "false information" to the Agency.
Fraudulent claims by Monsanto since 1985 that genetically engineered (rBGH) milk is indistinguishable from natural milk. These claims persist despite contrary evidence. Monsanto's reckless marketing in 1976 of plastic Coke bottles made from acrylonitrile, a chemical closely related to VC, prior to its testing for carcinogenicity and migration into the Coke. |

In a sea of books about making everyday choices that benefit the environment, almost none gives a scientifically grounded, realistic depiction of how much any one of those choices actually matters in the grand scheme of environmental protection and restoration, What's worse—paper or plastic? Does it even matter? If you eat meat every day but take the bus to work, are you doing better or worse than a vegetarian who drives solo?
According to the authors, "Not all consumption has an equal impact on the environment. |
| Sustainable Fisheries Certification mmmm Unlike the Department of Agriculture's Organic Standard label or the environmental protection Agency's Energy Star label [see Using Energy Efficiently, p. 166], a standard, overarching sustainable fisheries' certification has not yet been established for restaurants, retailers, and fishers. Right now, a proliferation of systems, protocols, and evaluation schemes, as well as conscientious distributors like EcoFish and CleanFish, are dedicated to identifying and supplying sustainable seafood. |

Antioxidant benefits from plant extracts could help hair in terms of environmental protection, but again, these ingredients don't cling to hair very well and they don't remain stable when hair is being rinsed in the shower. For the most part, plant extracts have little benefit for hair. It is also important to remember that just because an ingredient comes from a plant doesn't automatically make it good for skin or for hair. There are plenty of natural ingredients that have the potential to irritate skin (Source: www.hairscientists.org/ article7.htm; and www.naturaldatabase.com). |

Most dry cleaners use a solvent called perchloroethylene, or perc; the process produces waste that the environmental protection Agency considers hazardous. Perc is toxic to plants, fish, and marine animals, and toxic to us in large doses. It can potentially contaminate drinking water if it's allowed to seep into the the ground. The substance can enter our bodies through contaminated air and water, and can be stored for prolonged periods of time in body fat, as well as in the plants and soil around our homes. |

Environmental Scientist Mike Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., points out that a person who eats 100 grams of soy protein would exceed safe levels if NDMA is present in excess of 0.20 parts per billion in steam-treated soy flour or 0.36 parts per billion in soy protein isolate. |

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), environmental protection Agency (EPA), and other governmental regulatory agencies have become nothing more than the handmaidens of international corporations and worldwide financial conglomerates. A revolving-door policy exists that is designed to grease the palms of bureaucrats in charge of regulatory agencies, which then pass rules and regulations that favor profit-mongering conglomerates. In exchange, our bureaucratic heads are offered lucrative jobs or consulting fees. |

| Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally within the earth's crust that has been classified by the environmental protection Agency (EPA) as a known carcinogen. Radon test kits are easy to find at hardware stores and are relatively inexpensive. If radon is found, sealing cracks and improving ventilation in the basement will usually improve the situation.

Worse yet, some infants will receive doses even higher; because thimerosal tends to settle in the vial. No candidate who won ran on a platform of fiscal sanity, disease prevention, and serious reforms in energy, education, campaign finance and environmental protection. (If I'm wrong about that statement, and there actually was such a sane candidate, they're clearly the rare exception.) Democrats mostly won on a national knee-jerk reaction to the behavior of the Republicans. The consensus seemed to be, "Anybody is better than the Republicans," and many people just voted for Democrats without knowing anything about the candidates' positions on important issues. |

LYSOPHOSPHATIDYLETHANOLAMINE (LPE)
The environmental protection Agency (EPA) has approved lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE), another phosphatidyl substance commercially extracted from soybeans, for use as a fruit rip-ener and shelf-life extender. The produce industry now uses LPE— once called cephalin—to treat grapes, cranberries, strawberries, blueberries, apples, tomatoes and cut flowers.
When applied to fruits that are nearly ripe—going into puberty, so to speak—LPE promotes ripening. |

According to environmental protection standards, they have to dispose of these chemicals in an environmentally sound way. That can mean trapping them in absorbent materials designed to render the chemicals inert and then disposing of those materials in a landfill. But more often than not, because of the increased expense involved in such endeavors, many film processing companies just pour the chemicals down the drain.

The Mysterious Changing Hot Potato
The FDA isn't the only government agency that regulates or promotes GM food. The environmental protection Agency (EPA) also plays a role, as was illustrated in an October, 1998 article in the New York Times Sunday Magazine. The article describes Monsanto's "New Leaf potato, which creates its own Bt pesticide, and reveals how the EPA and FDA juggle its regulation to satisfy industry desires. The author of the article, Michael Pollan, "was mystified by the fact that the Bt toxin was not being treated as a 'food additive' subject to labeling. |
