Recently, scientists from the environmental protection Agency wondered whether contaminants that harm the endocrine system might produce a more toxic effect when they act in combination. As it turns out, blends of certain synthetic compounds do create a synergistic effect; two weakly estrogenic compounds create a more potent hit than one compound on its own. The harmful effects of endocrine disruptors are increased two- to threefold when these different chemicals act in unison to block endocrine receptors from normal functioning. |

Shooting ranges could be declared hazardous waste sites by the environmental protection Agency when they are shut down, and it will cost millions of dollars to clean them up. DOE recognizes the contamination problem that exists at its own shooting ranges, which are used by security personnel. So, it plans to switch from lead bullets to ESPTM bullets for training and security."
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (www.nssf.org), categories of ranges include handgun outdoors, rifle outdoors, skeet shooting, sporting clays, trap shooting, and cowboy action shooting. |

At the time the State Department of environmental protection just did not want to know what was going on. They were all about defeating the monitoring process so they wouldn't get slammed by the feds.
"When I said we ought to tell the state, I was told that wasn't a good idea. They just wanted us to look like we were watching out for things that nobody really wanted or expected us to find.

In contrast, the United States is guided by a "prove harm" approach. The environmental protection Agency must prove a toxic substance "presents an unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment" before regulating it — which roughly translates to "show us the dead bodies." The burden of proof is so high that the EPA hasn't even been able to ban certain uses of asbestos, and hasn't even tried to ban a toxic compound since it lost the asbestos fight in court 18 years ago. |
| For 25 years we've known that phthalates disrupt the production of testosterone critical for the masculinization of the male species," said Earl Gray, a top phthalate researcher at the US environmental protection Agency.3 Hundreds of animal studies show that phthalates like dibutyl phthalate (DBP) can block male hormones called androgens, which are responsible for making a male into a male. |
| The group was founded in 1996 after the US environmental protection Agency named medical waste incinerators as the leading source of dioxin, one of the most potent carcinogens. Health Care Without Harm was pushing hospitals to phase out medical devices made of vinyl plastic, which created dioxin when manufactured and burned, and which also had a second problem: they leached phthalates into patients. Vinyl medical devices such as IV bags were softened with di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), a close cousin of the phthalate Jane found in the nail polish. |
| They also relied on the "safe level" of exposure set in the 1990s by the environmental protection Agency, which was derived from a 1953 study that didn't look at the reproductive effects of phthalates. Besides all that, Jane noticed early on in the deliberations that the panel was being heavily influenced by cosmetics industry representatives. |
| Yet in 2005, the environmental protection Agency fined Du Pont $16.5 million for covering up two decades' worth of company studies about the health risks of a Teflon chemical that is ubiquitous in drinking water supplies and people's bodies.14 Recent Du Pont ads in Good Housekeeping magazine feature a smiling young woman in a white lab coat with the caption, "As a scientist, I make Teflon. As a mother I use it."15

| U. S. environmental protection Agency ... have been drinking water with unsafe levels of arsenic..."!73 Arsenic enters the body through the intestinal tract and, if not eliminated, can contribute to a weakened immune system and bowel disease.
Levels of arsenic in the environment can increase with natural events such as volcanic activity, rock erosion, and forest fires; but human actions can also release arsenic, often in extremely hazardous amounts. Every year, industrial pollution accounts for the release of thousands of pounds of the deadly chemical. |

At the same time, encourage tougher government standards on pollution by writing the environmental protection Agency (EPA), your senator, and your representative. More stringent guidelines for certain pollution (particles in the 2.5-to-10-micron range, often produced by coal plants and diesel fuel) provide reasonable goals for most urban environments.

The toxicity of lead exposure
Both the environmental protection Agency (EPA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) agree that lead harms virtually every system in the body -- physiologically and psychologically. Lead exposure has been recognized as a health hazard for over 2,000 years and can be of particular danger to small children and fetuses, as even the smallest amount can cause irreversible harm. |

The US environmental protection Agency has begun an investigation to determine how a Teflon chemical has found its way into the blood of virtually every American, and polluted drinking water supplies. Perfluorooctanoic acid, a key ingredient in the making of Teflon non-stick coating for cookware can cause testicular, breast, liver and prostate cancers, as well as birth defects. And in 2004 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found perchlorate contamination in nearly all of the more than 200 samples of lettuce and milk it collected and tested nationwide. |

Earl Gray's laboratory at the environmental protection Agency is looking at the low-dose toxicity of phthalates during crucial windows of fetal development. He also thinks that chemicals in household products and cosmetics act like sex hormones or block male androgens. Gray is an androgen tox-icologist with the EPA who has coauthored at least five studies on the subject, and his work reveals that male reproductive development is acutely sensitive to some phthalates. |

House not only investigated how it came to be that William L. Marcus PhD, a top EPA scientific adviser, came to write the foreword for Diet for a Poisoned Planet. Marcus was fired not long after, even though he had clearly written the foreword as a public citizen and not in his capacity with the EPA. |

Most toxicity experts agree that the main source of human contamination comes from eating fish from waters in which the PCB levels are high, which today can be almost anywhere. The environmental protection Agency estimates that fish can accumulate up to nine million times the level of PCBs in the water in which they live. PCBs have been found in fish from the deepest and most remote parts of the world's oceans.
Fish and shellfish are natural accumulators of toxins, because they live and are flushed by the water in which they dwell. |

The federal environmental protection Agency has identified 123 chemical plants in twenty-four states where a terrorist act or accident could threaten a million or more people.8 The EPA's own records also show that the United States is home to 2,500 to 2,800 facilities that each put more than 10,000 people at risk of injury or death if there were a major chemical release.9 In total, some 15,000 chemical plants and refineries are at risk of being turned into chemical time bombs by a terrorist attack.

Originally, Congress passed the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) in 1976 as a means of giving the environmental protection Agency (EPA) a way to track industrial chemicals produced within or imported into the United States, and to be a means for the federal government to require comprehensive health and safety testing for all new and existing chemicals.
But now the TSCA is one of the weakest environmental laws in the United States. The Chemical Manufacturers Association has waged a fierce battle against this act, mainly because of the safety testing requirements. |

In 2002, Gray went after the other critical leg of environmental protection: the judiciary. He cofounded the Committee for Justice, which played a central role in supporting President Bush's judicial nominees, many of whom are drawn from the very industries overseen by the EPA. According to a report by the Center for Investigative Reporting, between 2001 and 2004 more than one third of President Bush's nominees —twenty-one out of fifty-nine —had a history of working as lawyers and lobbyists on behalf of the oil, gas, and energy industries. |

The federal government has not yet established a standard for the perchlorate, but the environmental protection Agency has adopted a provisional recommendation that contamination in drinking water not exceed a range of 4 to 18 parts per billion. Perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel, munitions and fireworks, can affect thyroid gland functions and lead to developmental difficulties in children. The FDA found perchlorate in 217 of 232 samples of milk and lettuce in 15 states. In 104 samples of milk, the average concentration was 5.76 parts per billion. |

The children performed as though they were a few months behind for their age. An environmental protection Agency report estimated that 85,000 US women of childbearing age have excessive exposures to mercury. The mercury in fish comes 60 percent from burning coal and oil, and 36 percent from waste incineration. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) said it would cost up to $10 billion to fit power plant smoke stacks with filters to capture mercury, and that "it's just not worth it."

Arsenic acts as a growth stimulant in chickens—develops the meat faster—and since then, the poultry industry has gone wild using this ingredient," says Donald Herman, a Mississippi agricultural consultant and former environmental protection Agency researcher who has studied this use of arsenic for a decade. The Environmental Defense Council reports that more than four billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released into the environment each year, including seventy-two million pounds of known carcinogens. |

Pharmaceutical chemicals are not regulated by the environmental protection Agency, so there is no enforced limit of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water. In fact, in the United States, there is no government agency that is even testing the level of pharmaceuticals in public drinking water on a regular basis. So it is possible, in fact likely, that these levels will continue to rise in the years ahead without being detected or reported to the public at all. I often think about the environmental impact of our culture's massive consumption levels of prescription drugs. |
| The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), enacted by Congress in 1976, gives the United States environmental protection Agency (EPA) "broad authority to identify and control substances that may pose a threat to human health or the environment." And even with such standards in place there are loopholes. For example, certain chemicals already in commerce prior to and even after the enactment of TSCA do not require testing, regardless of whether or not they may cause harm. |

But green chemistry didn't achieve American media consciousness until October 2005, when we began to hear another term, particularly important to the organic chemists whose starting materials are fossil fuels. That term is metathesis.
Metathesis is a concept of organic chemistry that involves the efficient swapping of groups of atoms between molecules. |
